On January 21, 1828, the Vermont Mutual Fire Insurance Company became the first insurance company founded in the state of Vermont. At that time in our Nation’s history Andrew Jackson had just succeeded John Quincy Adams as the 7th President of the United States, the price of a ticket to sail from Ireland to the United States was $30, Webster had just published his first dictionary and Abraham Lincoln was still a teenager.
From those humble beginnings in Montpelier Vermont, Vermont Mutual Fire Insurance Company has grown into Vermont Mutual Insurance Group, comprised of Vermont Mutual Insurance Company, Granite Security Insurance Company and Northern Security Insurance Company. Together, more commonly known as Vermont Mutual.

And Ward Group, one of the industry’s most respected benchmarking organizations, has recognized Vermont Mutual as one of the Top 50 Property and Casualty insurers in the United States for the past 18 years, placing Vermont Mutual in the top 2% of all P&C insurance companies in the country.
Over 330,000 customers across the Northeast rely on us to provide insurance protection for their homes, personal property, autos, businesses and personal and commercial liability coverage. That’s a big responsibility, but one we embrace, along with the help of the local Independent Agents we partner with to deliver and service our products. And while providing exceptional insurance protection is our primary focus, we also feel we have a responsibility to the communities where we do business. Through the Vermont Mutual Charitable Giving Fund, we have donated over $6 million dollars since 2014 to hundreds of local charities throughout the Northeast to help members of our communities in their time of need.
As we close-in on our 200th anniversary in 2028, we continue to work hard not to act our age, but in doing so, our pride in our past is exceeded only by our excitement for the future.
